About Us comrade

Who are you?

My name is Cameron. I live in Vancouver, BC.

I have done a variety of things in my life (car dealership lot attendant, junk removal, Starbuck barista, general customer service, IT solutions, audio technician, bass guitar player, writer, baker) like the rest of us, because humans are multi-talented like that. Some of those things I was paid to do, some of it was/is for fun. For a while, I didn't really know what I wanted to do. And then I stumbled upon education/learning.

I think I always liked the process of learning and the field of education, but it wasn't until I had some opportunities to explore that space in a more formal setting that I realized how much I really like it, and it is probably one of the few areas in my life that I really find myself feeling a sense of purpose. So now I'm kind of an instructional designer/learning person. It is not my entire sense of self, but one of those things that really makes me feel excited and invested.

Why do you have a "On Programming" section then?

I'll be a litte bit honest, I have thought about getting rid of it, and putting it in my "On Other Stuff" section. I struggle with calling myself a programmer since I'm not a professional, or ever really had a job solely around programming. I've made things here and there, and it's mostly a hobby for me. But! This entire website is part of that hobby, and entirely self-built and self-hosted. I figured things out, researched how to make things work/safe (since I'm self-hosting), and generally have fun poking around at these things. So a section on programming felt like it should be separate.

This isn't a brag, but "self-built" means no AI, though I did look at other people's examples/code (which as far as I know could have been AI generated). I also make some use of design templates for the CSS stuff, but I also adjust and change things quite a bit to make it my own. Also, I full on steal Steph Ango's Flexoki theme for colouring because I love their work. That one I will shamelessly admit is pure copy and paste.

Comrade?

Comrade

I don't know. It kind of started as a funny joke to myself. I had the "About" page but for some reason felt like it need to be an "About me" so that it was implied the page would be about me, and not just an abstract "about something" page. Usually you'll see "About Us" (cause there is a team of people, and not one individual), and I thought it would be funny to put "About Us" even though it is one person (me). And then putting "comrade" in there was funny, too. And then kind of hiding the "comrade" was funny. But once I started playing around with it too much, it kind of became my own little design choice. So... comrade. It's about us.
